WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED
YOUTH OPPORTUNITY
United Way of Greater Newark (UWGN) is committed to promoting a love of reading and supporting youth literacy across our community. Through our Celebrity Read program, local leaders and community partners visit schools and youth programs to read with students and highlight the importance of education and lifelong learning. In addition, UWGN distributes new books to students and community partners, helping ensure young people have access to the resources they need to grow, learn, and succeed.
ECONOMIC MOBILITY
Our organization serves as a backbone agency guiding the Newark Prosperity Hub. Together with our partners, we empower residents of Greater Newark to forge the pathway to financial stability by streamlining key financial services and programs, such as the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), and by providing wrap-around opportunities for debt alleviation, wealth building and financial growth.
COMMUNITY RESILIENCY
United Way of Greater Newark leads efforts to strengthen community resiliency by mobilizing resources and partnerships during times of crisis. From coordinating relief funds for the Newark/Irvington fires and responding to the Newark water crisis, to supporting residents during hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic, UWGN steps in when the community needs it most. By convening partners, raising critical funds, and directing aid to affected families, UWGN helps Newark-area communities recover, rebuild, and emerge stronger from adversity.
EDUCATION IMPACT
Celebrity Read recruited 225 volunteers to read to students across our footprint in 12 schools, showcasing the importance of literacy to approximately 2,000 students.
ECONOMIC IMPACT
UWGN’s Asset Building Coalition filed 9,000 tax returns for Newark’s ALICE residents which returned over $12MM to the community.
HEALTH IMPACT
United Way of Greater Newark’s Community COVID-19 Fund raised more than $6.5 million to support the local community. The fund included small business grants, emergency food aid and support for the city-wide vaccine strategy.
